Stephen Strasburg was the last NL East rookie to showcase his talent. His "epic" major league debut ended on a good note as Strasburg dominated the opposition for the win. Strasburg sat down 14 Pittsburgh batters on strikes. Strasburg may give the Nationals the spark they need to climb to the top of the NL East. Consistency will be the key.
Strasburg's not the only player in the rookie of the year race. Jason Heyward, who was another big rookie name, has shown his dominance at the plate. Ike Davis has became a everyday first basemen for New York. Mike Stanton was just called to play as the starting right fielder. And as well, Phillies top prospect Domonic Brown may get in the race. The NL East is being reborn. It has became the most competitive division in the National League, if not the entire MLB. Every team has a bright future and has done well this year. No longer will any team be 30 games back. Each team has a shot. If you need a 5 tool player find Jason Heyward's number. The early rookie of the year favorite, has hit 10 home runs. Batting in the 2 and 7 hole Heyward has knocked in 40 runs. Heyward has also swiped 3 bases. The numbers speak for themselves.
Ike Davis was called up due to the struggles of Mike Jacobs. Jacobs was the replacement for the injured Daniel Murphy. Davis stole the spotlight from former Red Sox Jason Bay. He's knocked 7 home runs, even with spacious Citi Field as his home stadium. The doubles machine has a nice glove as well.
Stanton was a monster in the minor leagues. He rocked 21 home runs in a short stint at AA Jacksonville before being called up just a day ago. Stanton hit a career high 39 homers in 08 with Florida's Single-A affiliate. Stanton scored one of the Marlins 8 runs last night. Stanton has the potential to lead the league in homers.
Brown is the only young phenom to not make it to the bigs yet but he still has potential. Brown was ranked as the #14 prospect by mlb.com. Domonic is hitting a whopping .317 in AA Reading. Brown could earn a call up late this year, or most likely start with the team next year.
