Ruben Amaro is a genius so far!

Ruben Amaro is a sheer genius.  His big off season moves carried the Phillies in todays opening day game against the Washington Nationals.  Roy Halladay which many say was the biggest move of the off season pitched  7 innings allowing only one run.  Placido Polanco had a career high 6 runs batted in.  4 of those rbis came from a grand slam he hit.  Here's a complete rundown of the game.

-- In the first inning Roy Halladay ran into some trouble and allowed 1 run.  Ryan Zimmerman hit a double to deep center allowing Nyjer Morgan to score.  After allowing this run Halladay was able to settle down and not allow any more runners to score.

-- The 4th inning is when the balls started flying.  This game was no longer a pitching duel.  It was now a blowout.  Ryan Howard started the runs spree.  His upper deck shot gave the Phillies two runs and the lead.  Howard's ball traveled 404 ft. until it landed in the hands of a fan.  After two consecutive singles by Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez,  Shane Victorino was able to poke a single to left which scored Werth.  It was easy to tell that Nationals starter John Lannan was getting rattled.  To me it looked like the away team had more fan support.  I saw many fans sporting Phils caps and t-shirts.  With runners on second and third with one out stud Doc Halladay was at the plate.  Swinging away Doc got a piece of one that bounced to Zimmerman.  Ryan was unable to make the out at home which gave Halladay his 2nd career rbi and his 4th career hit.  After Jimmy Rollins drew a walk Placido Polanco recorded one of his rbis.  Placido hit a sac fly to left scoring Shane Victorino.  The Phillies just slaughtered Lannan.  Lanna gave up 7 hits and 5 runs in 3.2 innings of work.  Finally Jim Riggleman decided to get him out of there.  He gave lefty reliever Jesse English the ball with the bases loaded and Ryan Howard at the plate.  This was English's major league debut.  I can't even think about how nervous he must have been.  The youngster was able to get Howard to ground out to end the inning.

-- The top of the 6th is when the Phillies delivered there next blow.   Against reliever Miguel Batista the Phillies were able to produce two runs.  The first came off of Jimmy Rollins's bat.  He hit a RBI triple to right field.  Rollins was flying as Willie Harris missed a close play in the outfield.  The second was from Placido Polanco who singled in J-Roll.

-- Here is where the fun began for Polly.  With the Phillies leading 7-1 Polanco hit a shot that traveled 384 ft for a grand slam.  Fresh out of the pen Jason Bergmann gave him the cheese.  Polanco smacked that cheese hard.  This just goes to show that the Phillies are becoming the evil empire of the NL East (I love it!!).  Sadly Chase Utley couldn't follow up Polanco's great showing and grounded out to end the inning.

-- To finish off the game after Doc was pulled Manuel sent out Antonio Bastardo.  The young lefty didn't have a great spring.  He posted a ERA over 5.  Today Antonio didn't look much better.  After giving up 2 consecutive hits Bastardo fell into a jam he could not get out off.  Luckily Danys Baez was able to finished off the Nats quickly in the 8th.  Rule 5 pickup David Herndon had a strong ninth that finished off the game.  I'm glad to see the Phillies get some use out of him.  I hope they don't return him anytime soon.
