20 Prospects in 20 Days:#17 Freddy Galvis

#17 Freddy Galvis

What the future holds: Galvis could be in the majors soon.  There aren't many middle infielders in the Phillies organization and both in the majors are aging.  Also Jimmy Rollins is getting towards the end of his contract.  For Galvis to be the starting SS or 2B he needs to make more contact.  He doesn't need power due to his overwhelming amount of speed.  Galvis is a sure handed fielder.  Some scouts have compared him to Pedro Feliz (now the Astros 3B).

Entry to the Phillies: Galvis was signed in 2006 out of Venezuela.  He made his pro debut in 2007 in the NYPL league.  Galvis has improved his defense much sense joining the organization.  In Galvis's first season he hit .214.  In 2009 he hit .240.  His average has improved in every season and that needs to continue to happen for Galvis to be a starting SS.

Last year:  Galvis hit .240 with only 2 home runs.  However he did hit 9 doubles and 3 triples.  His speed is fantastic.  I would compare his ability to take extra bases to the likes of Michael Bourn.  Bourn led the majors in triples in 2008 and was second in 2009 to the Phillies own Shane Victorino.

Sorry for the delay.
